You've found the perfect piece. It fits brilliantly, it works beautifully, and you want it to stay that way. Here's the thing, shapewear is a bit like a good relationship. You have to put in a little effort to keep it going strong.
Hand washing is always best. Fill a basin with cool water, add a small amount of gentle detergent, and give it a gentle squeeze — no aggressive scrubbing. If you must use a machine, put it in a mesh laundry bag and use the delicate cycle with cold water. Hot water is shapewear's worst enemy. It breaks down the elastic fibres and takes the shape right out of your shapewear. Ironic.
We cannot stress this enough. The dryer is where shapewear goes to die. The heat destroys the elastane, and you'll end up with something that fits like a sad, stretched-out sock. Lay it flat or hang it to dry at room temperature and it'll be good as new.
After washing, gently press the water out rather than wringing. Twisting shapewear can distort its shape and damage the fabric. Wrap it in a clean towel and give it a gentle press instead.
Fold it flat or roll it — don't scrunch it into a ball at the back of your drawer (we see you). Keeping its shape during storage means it holds its shape when you wear it.
After every wear, ideally. Shapewear sits close to your skin, so treating it like any other underwear makes sense. Giving it a rinse after each use keeps it fresh and extends its life considerably.
Treat your shapewear well and it'll return the favour every time you put it on.
